Instructions

Gauge: Each basic square measures 6-1/2 inches square and each bordered unit measures 15-1/2 inches square.

Afghan contains 15 units. Each unit consists of a block of four basic squares and is framed with 3 border rounds.

BASIC SQUARE (Make 60): With Hot Red, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring.

  1. Round 1: Ch 1, 8 sc in ring, sl st to top of beginning sc.
  2. Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, sl st to top of beginning sc: 16 sc. Fasten off.
  3. Round 3: With Bright Yellow, attach with sl st in any sc, ch 1, sc in same st, ch 1, * sc in next st, ch 1, repeat from * 14 more times, sl st to top of beginning sc.
  4. Round 4: Sl st into next ch-1 sp, * (ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, sc in next sp) for petal, repeat from * seven more times, working last sc in beginning ch-1 sp: 8 petals formed. Fasten off.
  5. Round 5: With Paddy Green, attach with sl st in second dc of any petal, ch 1, sc in same st, * hdc in next st, dc in next ch-3 sp, tr between petals (over next sc into ch-1 sp of Round 3), dc in next ch-3 sp, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc, * repeat from * seven more times, omitting final sc in last repeat, sl st to top of beginning sc. Fasten off.
  6. Round 6: With Aran, attach with sl st to any hdc to right of any sc, [ch 4, (tr, ch 1, 2 tr) in same st] for first corner, * ** dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts **, (2 tr, ch 1, 2 tr) in next st for corner, repeat from * two more times, repeat between **’s one time, sl st to top of beginning ch-4. Fasten off.

UNIT ASSEMBLY (Make 15 units):

  1. For first row of unit, hold two squares with right sides together, matching sts; join Aran to upper right-hand corner of top square. Working in back (outer) loops only of both squares, ch 1, then sc in each sc along one side of joining squares. Repeat for second row of unit.
  2. Join the two rows as follows: Hold the two rows right sides together to sc rows together in back (outer) loops only, working a sc into the row of sc sts at intersection of squares. Fasten off.

UNIT BORDER:

  1. Round 1: With Aran, attach with sl st to any corner ch-1 sp of unit, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in same corner sp, * ** sc in each st and ch-1 sp along side, working a sc into the row of sc sts at intersection of blocks **, (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in corner ch-1 sp, * repeat from * two more times, repeat between **’s one time, sl st to top of beginning sc: 35 sc between corner ch-1 sps. Fasten off.
  2. Round 2: Attach Hot Red with sl st in any corner sp, * (sc, ch 3, 2 dc) scallop in corner sp, sk next 2 sts, [(sc, ch 3, 2 dc) scallop in next st, sk next 2 sts] 11 times, (sc, ch 3, 2 dc) scallop in next st, sk next st, repeat from * three more times; join with sl st in top of beginning sc: 48 scallops around unit. Fasten off.
  3. Round 3: (When working into sts of Round 1, work over sts of Round 2.) Attach Aran with sl st in any corner sp of Round 1; ch 4 (counts as tr), (tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in corner sp of Round 1, * ** [sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in next dc of Round 2, sk next dc of Round 2, tr in next sc of Round 1 (between scallops of Round 2)] 11 times, sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in next dc of Round 2 **, (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next corner sp of Round 1, repeat from * two more times, repeat between **’s one time, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-4: 39 sts between corner ch-2 sps. Fasten off.
  4. Repeat unit border around each unit to complete bordered units.

FINAL ASSEMBLY:

  1. Hold two bordered units with right sides together, matching sts; join Aran to upper right-hand corner of top unit. Working in back (outer) loops only of both units, ch 1, then sc in each sc along side of units.
  2. Join units together to form five horizontal rows of three blocks each. Join rows by holding two rows right sides together; sc rows together in back (outer) loops only, working a sc into the row of sc sts at intersection of blocks. Fasten off.

AFGHAN BORDER:

  1. Round 1: With Aran, attach with sl st to top left corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, [2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc] in same corner sp, working along long side edge, * ** sc in each st along side, working a sc into the row of sc sts at intersection of units **, (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) in corner ch-2 sp, repeat from * two more times, repeat between **’s one time, sl st to top of beginning sc: 652 sc around.
  2. Round 2: Sl st to next corner ch-1 sp, ch 1, * (sc, ch 3, 2 dc) scallop in corner sp, sk next 2 sts, ** [(sc, ch 3, 2 dc) scallop in next st, sk next 2 sts] 67 times, repeat from * to ** for corner, (sc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next st, sk next st, [(sc, ch 3, 2 dc) scallop in next st, sk next 2 sts] 39 times, (sc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next st, sk next st; repeat from * one more time; join with sl st in top of beginning sc: 220 scallops around. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Weave in and trim ends. Block if desired.
